My singing voice is atrocious. Out of consideration for others, I like to avoid using it, and I’m okay with that. Other than my brief fascination with punk rock in the ’90’s, I’ve never really considered myself a musical person. BUT, when my baby wouldn’t stop crying the other night, I felt a bizarre and unyielding urge to sing a lullaby.
He had been fed and changed and bounced, so I decided to stop fighting the urge, and sing. I sang:
“Hush little baby don’t say a word,
mamma’s gonna buy you a mocking bird.
And if that mocking bird don’t sing,
mamma’s gonna buy you a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring don’t shine….”
I sang that lullaby with all my might.
Then the husband entered the room and suggested I stop singing that to him. Immediately, my defenses went up. I thought:
How DARE he suggest I stop singing. I am experiencing a motherly moment, here. Henry doesn’t care if my singing voice rivals the sound of a donkey on crack.
Before I could open my mouth to say anything, the husband continued:
“I think he would sleep better if he knew you weren’t wasting your efforts on buying faulty items and defective mocking birds.”
Love this post and Henry (and you!)

Haha, yes, that song has some strange lyrics. I used to sing to my babies too. ‘Sunshine On My Shoulders’ was my go-to. Brings back special memories just thinking of it now. 🙂

I’ll have to try ‘Sunshine on my Shoulders’ next! I’ve also tried ‘Stay Awake’ from Mary Poppins, but I can’t even come remotely close to sounding like Julie Andrews, so I played it through my iPhone and hoped he wouldn’t notice it wasn’t me 😛

How about singing:
Oh, Henry, oh Henry;
Henry’s a little boy.
Oh, Henry, oh Henry;
Henry’s such a joy.
He has ten toes and a little nose
That honks and snorts and sometimes blows.
Oh, Henry, oh Henry;
Henry’s a little boy.
There. Now you know the words to the tune you can’t get out of your head. 🙂

I used to love put funny things on my kids when they were kids. Glasses etc. And that mockingbird thing doesn’t make sense, but I’m sure your singing voice is lovely.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who puts glasses on kids! Yeah, that mockingbird thing IS strange! But in the case of mocking my singing voice, a defective mocking bird is probably the way to go 😀

Every time I hear that song I think of Dumb and Dumber and how Harry and Lloyd sang that song on their roadtrip.

My apologies for not popping in sooner, Amy. Life ate me and spit me out! it’s been…ridiculous.
But on to that boy of yours! I’m loving the poindexters. 🙂 (My x- husband actually charmed and ensnared me with a pair of those during our wild and willy courtship days. Apparently, they’re a hit with the ladies.) And I say sing to your heart’s content! I doubt seriously your child will develop any maldaptive behaviors as a result of singing him a maldaptive lullaby…hahaha. Too funny…
I’m running a million miles an hour but had to stop by to heck on you guys! So good to see your little guy is doing well. 😉

Thank you so much for checking! ❤ My apologies for being somewhat MIA for a while, too. Things have been a bit rough lately, but will hopefully pick back up, soon!
