Pep Talk

This week, I am going to initiate a conversation with someone that will push me beyond my comfort zone, and it scares the bejeebers out of me (p.s. I like the word ‘bejeebers’). Becoming someone who lives off the land in the arctic feels like it would be easier for me than having this conversation. But I know that for the advancement of my livelihood and my self esteem, it’s important that I do it.

So, I am giving myself a little pep talk before said conversation.

My brain gets a little mushy when I am nervous…so, I defer to other people’s brains for inspiration.

Opportunity

I like this one because I am fond of powers…super powers in particular. I have therefore decided to adopt the philosophy that some of my biggest challenges in life might end up giving me superpowers.

Harry Potter

I like this one. Aside from the fact that it comes from a magical wizard school, humor is neat. And, the old ‘picturing someone in their underwear’ for the purposes of reducing anxiety can be problematic, so I’ll go with this one instead.

Okay. Off to challenge myself and imagine it looking comical! Umm….wait, that didn’t come out right… But, you get the idea πŸ˜‰

  1. I like to think that my daughter has more courage than me because she actually tries things like this. She overcomes her fears. I just keep being bitter about things. I wish you good luck and hope that you conquer your fears!

    • Thanks Ben! Your daughter sounds pretty awesome! I feel like I have to push myself even in the littlest ways sometimes, or I’ll sit and procrastinate procrastinating a time to procrastinate. HA!

    • Thanks for the encouragement, Hook! Just did it! Just navigated new waters, and it felt good! Glad I did it, even if it doesn’t turn out as I hope it will (and glad that its over now, too)!

  2. Eek, good luck!!! I’ve been there before- knowing I have to have a tough conversation and being super nervous about it. Like you said, finding a way to view it in a different light (comical, interesting, experimentation) really helps. When I’m dealing with a tough situation I like to pretend I’m watching a movie and I am just one of the actresses. It takes the edge off and allows me to more clearly form my ideas and convey them to people. It helps the sensitivity of the situation fade a bit! I’ll be thinking about you!

    • Thanks Courtney! I had the conversation yesterday, and it went well! After all was said and done, I wondered why I was so nervous about it in the first place πŸ˜€ But, I’m glad I did it! Maybe the next time I am in a similar position, it won’t be as nerve wracking beforehand. And, I am going to pretend I am in a movie. I seriously love that. Thank you so much for your support, Courtney! πŸ™‚

  3. I’m with you – anything that invokes humour and Harry Potter together has got to be a good thing! Best of luck with the conversation – I hope you’ll give us an update!

  4. Hmmm. I thought bensbitterblog was my comment for a moment there because I have a courageous daughter, too! I really like Courtney’s idea of making yourself an actress in a movie. I actually used to do that a lot when I was small, only I pretended my whole life was a movie!! Maybe that wasn’t so silly after all!! πŸ™‚

  7. I did this myself just last night! I was invited to join a book club’s discussion of my book. Talk about nerve-racking. But they were lovely, and things went well, and we did a lot of talking about other things as well.

Thanks for stopping by my site. πŸ™‚

  8. I applaud your awareness of your comfort zone and your willingness to push the envelope of it. It sounds like it went well. I am realizing that I have a lot of pushing outside of my comfort zone to do. A little nerve wracking but necessary and worth it in the long run. Reading this post helped me put these thoughts into context. Thank you!
